Critical Practices: Making, Writing, Curating, Educating.

NCAD is delighted to present Critical Practices: Making, Writing, Curating, Educating, a two day symposium bringing together artists, designer-makers, curators, researchers, students and cultural workers in an exploration of the critical contexts of glass art and design practice. It will run in conjunction with the Ireland Glass Biennale 2019 exhibition, which opens to the public on 24 October, 2019 at the Coach House Gallery, Dublin Castle Gardens, and will be held in partnership with the National Museum of Ireland – The Museum of Decorative Art and History and the Office of Public Works.
Symposium speakers include: Reino Liefkes, Senior Curator and Head of Ceramics and Glass at the V&A Museum, Diane C. Wright, Curator of Glass and Decorative Arts at the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio, United States; Paula Stokes, Artist and Co-Founder of the METHOD gallery, Seattle, United States; Dr. Audrey Whitty,Head of Collections Artists & Learning, Monika Gabriela Dorniak, Dr. Erin Dickson, Morgan Peterson, Laura Quinn, Peter Young, Andrea Spencer; Dr. Anna Mignosa, Assistant Professor of Cultural Economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam (the Netherlands) and University of Catania (Italy);
Dr. Ieva Zemite, Associate Professor at the Latvian Academy of Culture; Gayle Matthias, Programme Leader on the BA Hons 3D Design Crafts programme at Plymouth College of Art; and Nadania Idriss, founder and director of Berlin Glass e.V. and CEO of Berlin Art Glas GmbH.
Alongside a schedule of talks spanning two days, there will also be opportunities for delegates to attend a writing workshop on vocabularies of writing about making, led by Dr. Francis Halsall and writer Sue Rainsford, together with a workshop on recording interviews led by Dr Eleanor Flegg. This NCAD event forms part of the NCAD Creative Europe Project: Imagining a Sustainable Glass Network in Europe (ISGNE), which has initiated a dynamic schedule of cultural events, workshops, exhibitions and publications exploring glass within the context of intangible cultures, design, visual and applied arts.
